When a need arises, it is amazing how heroes come out of the woodwork! Two such heroes are Eric & Samuel Woods of Payson Paint & Supply. They recently discontinued carrying Valspar paint brand, and donated their entire overstock of inventory to the Payson Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore. “This donation couldn’t have come at a better time”, says Cindy Kofile, ReStore Manager, “We have just kicked off our A Brush with Kindness Level 1 Program which helps low-income homeowners who struggle to maintain the exterior of their homes, allowing them to reclaim their homes with pride and dignity, and this donation will go a long way to improving the lives of so many here in Rim Country”.

ABWK Level 1 includes: Exterior scraping, caulking and minor painting; window repair (new screen, glass); minor siding and trim repair; caulking/foaming cracks and gaps; cleaning gutters; minor soffit or fascia replacement; board replacement in porch, stair or ramp; door & window hardware repair or replacement; adding or replacing door seals; landscaping (small tree pruning and trimming, weeding, reseeding); insulating pipes and duct work (outside, not under home); wrapping water heaters; cleanup, brush & tree fire wise, minor junk removal and weather stripping.

• Habitat for Humanity’s A Brush with Kindness serves low-income homeowners who are selected based on: need (with income below 60% of area median income), ability to pay, and willingness to partner with us in the project.
• Payments made by the partner family are placed in a revolving fund so that Payson Area Habitat for Humanity’s A Brush with Kindness program can serve others in need.
• Habitat for Humanity’s A Brush with Kindness uses volunteers, donated materials, and an affordable payment schedule to make repairs on homes, helping low-income homeowners continue to live independently and securely in their homes.

Bike & Build raises funds for affordable housing projects.

- Over ten seasons, Bike & Build has contributed more than $4M to housing groups to fund projects planned and executed by young adults; this includes more than $600,000 donated from the summer of 2012. Bike & Build hopes to donate at about this contribution level for the summer of 2013.

- Through pre-arranged gifts, Bike & Build funds affordable housing projects executed by our participants in communities where our events begin. Through our grant program, our organization identifies and supports exciting projects involving young people all throughout the nation. Bike & Build also supports local affordable housing organizations along each route through on the road donations.

Payson Area Habitat for Humanity is launching new community projects to help our families and veterans in need.  Volunteers are the heart PAHH and are looking forward to adding new volunteers as well as welcoming back former Volunteers to the PAHH family.

• Secretary to assist the Acting Executive Director, ReStore Manager and other critical personnel
• Receptionist to answer phones, take messages, direct callers to the appropriate department, assist families with questions and applications

This is an opportunity to own a home for approximately $500 per month, including taxes, insurance, and HOA dues.

Habitat homes feature a no-interest 30-year mortgage, and low closing costs.

Keep your tax dollars local to help Payson area families!

Have you heard about Arizona’s Charitable Tax Credit? It’s a dollar-for-dollar credit off your Arizona taxes, up to $400 per couple and $200 single. You could qualify for this credit when you make a donation to PAHH (Payson Area Habitat for Humanity) this year.

So, you can redirect your tax dollars to stay here in town, where they can do the most good.

You need to itemize on your AZ return to qualify. You can also take a deduction on your itemized Federal return. It’s a win-win for you and our community. Currently, only about 5% of eligible Arizona tax payers take this credit for our communities, so please help spread the word among your friends! Can you imagine what would happen if even half of us knew about it and could do it?

Payson Area Habitat for Humanity is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. We are an affiliate in good standing with Habitat for Humanity International.  Our vision is a community where everyone has a decent place to live.  We’ve built 27 houses for families in need, right here in Payson, since 1995. With your  help, we can build many more, and offer a hand up (not a hand out) to local families.  It’s a long-term solution to end poverty housing and build a happy, healthy community.

We’re excited to announce our new “A Brush With Kindness” repair program, for low-income homeowners who need help with weatherizing, minor home repair, exterior painting, screen repairs, door repairs, and  firewise yard cleanup

Qualified applicants must own their own home and fall within the income guidelines of 30% – 60% of the area median income. Projects are chosen based on need, scope of work (if it’s something our volunteers can take on), and available funding. Applicants must commit to partnering with PAHH in completing a minimum requirement of sweat equity hours. Sweat equity hours can be accomplished by working hand-in-hand with our Volunteers to complete the project or by contributing hours on a project that is manageable for the homeowner. There are many opportunities with PAHH to complete the sweat equity hours needed.

Today, thanks to her own determination and support first from the Time Out Shelter and now Payson Area Habitat for Humanity, she and her kids are planning the move into a home of their own.

“In February, 2008,” says Anna, “It was very difficult to understand the plans the Lord had for my children and me.  I was living at Time Out, and initially, all I had was a very small bedroom, but believe me, I was very grateful for it.”

Believing in the spirit of a hand up, not a hand out, Anna had three steady jobs at one time and sometimes worked 16 hour days.

“Even though I worked very hard to make ends meet and pay my rent, I wanted to be able to have our own place.  I wanted to see the result of my work going into something lasting.  But looking at our economy and how the housing market was struggling, I just thought it would be impossible for my children to have a place they could call their own.”

“Then I found out about Payson Area Habitat for Humanity. I talked to a family that had already been approved for a house and learned how wonderful the program was, with no-interest mortgages. I wasn’t looking for a “free ride.”

“I was looking for a chance, an opportunity for a tax paying family that was more than willing to pay a mortgage and invest their hours towards a bigger goal. With hope and courage, I applied for a house at Habitat. Throughout the entire process, I was treated with consideration, love and respect and all my questions were answered. Everything went very smoothly. On October 17, 2012, I got the amazing news: my family had been approved! I was speechless and cried and thanked God for such blessing.”

“My children and I are already dreaming about the day we will move into our house and we spend our evenings and weekends planning for this day. The children have already started packing! They have chosen their rooms, the color of the paint and what they want in the yard. A small swimming pool and a puppy are #1 on the list!”

If you want to help other hardworking families earn their own homes in the future, you can help three ways:

First, if you are able, please take advantage of Arizona’s Charitable Tax Credit before December 31.  PAHH is a qualifying charity. If you make a donation up to $400 for a couple, you can get a dollar-for-dollar credit back on your state taxes if you itemize. This is a separate credit from the schools tax credit, so you can do both. Ongoing monthly donations via our Carpenter’s Club subscription are also most welcome!

Second, donations of furniture, appliances, housewares, tools, and building supplies to the ReStore are always welcome. We pick up the big stuff so you don’t have to move it!

And, we are always in need of volunteers at the ReStore, in the office, and for our A Brush With Kindness program which helps local low-income residents make repairs that they couldn’t otherwise afford.
